Stainless Steel Railings

Stainless steel can be very beneficial for modern interiors. The primary reason to equip your facilities with stainless steel railing is its impressive durability. It is one of the strongest metals able to support heavy loads. In addition, it is damage resistant and is almost impossible to scratch.

Picket Railings

Railings are an essential component of both commercial and residential buildings. They serve the purpose of keeping the residents safe and protecting them from falling. A picket railing system is an excellent choice if you plan to install them in your home. It consists of high-quality aluminum or stainless steel railing, posts, and pickets.

10mm Aluminum Topless Railings

Topless glass railings provide a unique look and an enhanced view of your home. Topless glass railings are the only type of railing that provides completely unobstructed views, as they do not have a top barrier. These railings can seamlessly integrate the outdoors with your deck.

Cable Railings

Cable railings are constructed from posts, rails, and narrow cables that allow you to see your surroundings right through the barrier. Depending on the deck configuration, you may have the option to space out the posts every three or five feet, which would help keep the view as unobstructed as possible.

Standoff

Standoff railing systems look like a continuous stream of glass that seems to float in the air, enhancing contemporary styles. We install standoff railings that sustain daily wear and tear. If you’re looking for safe railing systems that enhance modernity in your space, standoff railing is the perfect fit for your needs.

Windscreen Spigot Railings

This railing system is used when you can mount your railings on the floor or ground surface. It is perfect for outside patios, porches and balconies. The tilt lock technology is utilized to keep the glass in place. This technology easily allows the alignment of the mirror vertically and horizontally to get perfect alignment.

Benefits of Glass Railings

  • Enhanced Safety – Tempered or laminated safety glass is strong, impact‑resistant, and durable. Laminated glass retains fragments if broken, providing continuous fall protection.
  • Low Maintenance – Glass doesn’t warp, rust, or splinter. Routine cleaning with mild detergent keeps it pristine; there’s no need for painting or staining.
  • Design Versatility – Glass railings complement any architectural style, from coastal cottages to contemporary high‑rises. Tinted, frosted, or patterned glass can add privacy and flair.
  • Increased Property Value – Modern railings enhance curb appeal and resale potential.
  • Light, Visibility – Clear glass panels do not obstruct the sight and make the spaces look bigger.
  • Wind and Noise Control – Glass is used as a windbreak and as sound-dampening material when laminated.
  • Integration with Technology – options include LED-lit handrails, smart glass (clear-to-opaque), and integrated speakers or lighting.

Understanding Building
Codes and Safety Requirements

Height Requirements

Canadian building codes define minimum heights and structural loads for guards and railings. The National Building Code (NBC) requires guards on decks and balconies to be at least 1,070 mm high and to withstand a horizontal line load of 0.75 kN/m (51 lb/ft) and a concentrated load of 1.0 kN (225 lb) at any point. The Ontario Building Code specifies guard heights of 914 mm for balconies and 1,067 mm on stair landings. Additionally, railings must endure a vertical load of 1.5 kN/m on the top rail.

Glass Type Requirements

Only safety glass is permitted in guards. Tempered glass must meet stringent heat‑treatment standards; heat‑soaked tempered glass goes through an additional heating process to minimize spontaneous breakage. Laminated glass consists of multiple panes bonded with a plastic interlayer, maintaining integrity after breakage, and is often required near edges or overhangs. Wired glass, though still considered safety glass, is less commonly used due to lower impact resistance.

Structural Redundancy

Certain codes need the top rail to have a structural redundancy. Historically, the International Building Code (IBC) Section 2407 required that glass balusters not be installed without a handrail or guard structure attached. An exception to this was added in the 2009 IBC: two or more panels of equal thickness with laminated tops may be omitted. According to the BC Bulletin, though, topless glass guards are to be reviewed by an engineer and approved with an alternative solution to show structural redundancy.

Glass Material & Hardware Options

Frame and Hardware Materials

  • Aluminum – Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and available in anodized or powder-coated finishes. Ideal for frameless base shoes or post-and-panel systems.
  • Stainless Steel – Strong and durable; grade 316 is recommended in coastal environments.
  • Wood or Composite Rail Caps – Provide warmth and tactile grip on top rails; can be stained or painted to match surrounding finishes.
  • Hardware – Includes base shoes, spigots, standoffs, clamps, and top rail brackets. Anchors must be sized for substrate and loads.

Coatings & Treatments

  • Heat‑Soaked Tempering – Additional heat cycle to eliminate nickel-sulfide inclusions, reducing spontaneous breakage.
  • Hydrophobic Coatings – Repel water and reduce spotting.
  • Low‑E Coatings – Minimize solar heat gain while maintaining transparency.
  • Bird-Friendly Patterns – Help prevent collisions while preserving views.

Engineering & Design Considerations

Load Analysis

The engineers should take into account the uniform line loads on the top rail and concentrated loads at any point, wind loads on the exposed balconies, and dynamic loads due to human activity. The BC Bulletin compares 1.0 kN/m with approximately 100 kg per metre, showing the sizes of forces that a railing should be able to withstand.

Allowances for Movement

Glass expands and contracts with temperature changes. Systems must incorporate gaps or gaskets to prevent stress on edges. Expansion joints at corners or where the railing meets adjacent structures accommodate building movement. Deflection of base shoes or posts must be limited so that glass edges are not loaded in bearing.

Waterproofing & Drainage

In exterior applications, substructures are safeguarded against infiltration of water by flushing and drainage channels. Base shoes and spigots must have weep holes or drainage slots. Joint sealants should be UV-resistant and should work with glass and metal.

Fire & Wind Requirements

Although glass is not combustible, codes may demand fire-resistant assemblies in areas close to exits or egress paths. Additional engineering analysis is done in high-wind zones or areas prone to earthquakes to make sure that railings can withstand dynamic forces.
